#63 - AI43 - The Fable Fallout: Geopolitics and the Open Source Shift
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
This audio production is intended to bring new technologies that impact our lives, like digital assets, central bank digital currencies and artificial intelligence in an easy to understand way to a larger audience.
In this episode, we detail the following:
The US government forced Anthropic to pull its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models offline globally by issuing an export control directive that banned all access for foreign nationals due to national security concerns. This unprecedented use of an "AI kill switch" was triggered when Amazon researchers, including CEO Andy Jassy, alerted the administration to a security "jailbreak" in the models. This compounded existing government fears that Chinese labs were accessing Western models via gray-market "distillation attacks".
The crisis escalated rapidly due to poor communication between the government and Anthropic. When the White House demanded the models be pulled, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei was initially unreachable and subsequently refused to take the models offline, forcing the government to impose the sweeping export controls by Friday night.
Ultimately, the extreme speed of AI development is forcing both governments and tech leaders to make massive decisions without the time needed to properly troubleshoot, guaranteeing more disruptive misunderstandings in the future.
